Nigerian Church Governance Case Study

By ChurchFramework Team

The Nigerian church landscape is diverse and vibrant, with numerous denominations and independent congregations. However, this diversity has also led to various governance challenges, including financial mismanagement, nepotism, abuse of power, and lack of transparency. These issues have caused mistrust among congregants and have hindered the spiritual and organizational growth of many churches.

Many churches in Nigeria operate without transparent financial practices, leading to the misuse of congregational contributions for personal gain by clergy and church management.

Leadership roles are often passed down to family members or close associates without a fair selection process, resulting in ineffective governance and diminished trust among congregants.

Cases of clergy exerting undue influence over congregants, including inappropriate physical contact and coercive spiritual practices, have been reported, leading to psychological harm and a toxic church environment.
